Listed below are the steps you will need to take to clean up your creditreport for yourself. However, if you can find a good credit agency that you can trust, and you have the means to pay them, I will suggest to go ahead with it. But, you will be betteroff to do it yourself, and if you do decide to do so find a credible agency that you can trust.
By Federal Law you are entitle to at least one or two free credit reports fromthe three credit bureau agencies responsible for keeping track of our credit or spendinghabits. As you know that the cost to clean your credit report vary from ($100 to $500)that company so called 'credit clinic or credit counseling' will charge you todo something that you could have done for yourself.
You do not to have paid to get a copy of your credit, if you know how to get it. Here is how, all you need to do is to apply for a job or credit card, if you were turned down from obtaining the job or not given the credit card you can call the credit agency and let them know that you have been denied a credit card or job that you think is due to some incorrect information on your credit report. I believe you are entitled to one credit report from them
Here is What You Need To Get IT Cleaned Up:(A) Make a request for your Credit Reports from the three major Credit Agencies:
TRW Information Services,505 City Parkway West P.O. Box 5450Orange, CA 92667Phone # 1-800-687-7654Trans Union Credit Information Company444 N. Michigan Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60611Phone # 1-316-636-6100
Equifax, Inc. The Credit Bureau Inc. (CBI)P. O. Box 4091Atlanta, Georgia 30302Phone # 1-800-685-111
Credit Investigation Dept. Union Acceptance Corporation .O. Box 1083Indianapolis, IN 46206-1083It is important to have your entire Account numbers ready, such as Mortgage Loan, Car Loans, Credit Cards Accounts, etc.
After you have received your Credit Reports go through each item on the report with a pen and paper to write down important points: such as, late payments or paid off accounts but still listed on your report un-paid. It is your spouse's obligation to pay his or her assigned account after the court order divorce decree says who is responsible for what. It is your responsibility to document all these discrepancies so that you can show all the three agencies where you stand.
Now you are ready to make the necessary corrections in your report. Send them back to the three major Credit Agencies with documentations proof what you think should have been in
Credit report. The Credit agencies are really good in helping you out to make necessary adjustments to your reports after their investigation has been completed from all your creditors as well as reconciling with you. You will get a letter back in the mail to confirm their corrections in your credit report.
The trick is to go ahead and apply for a credit card with the hope that you would be denied for whatever reasons that may be given to you in their denial letter. You can apply for credit card with any retail stores or banks as long you at legal age of 21 years of age.
This is what the credit agency would like to see. But you need to write a letter to them explaining that you have been denied credit or job that you would like to see what is your credit report. I believe you have between 30 to 60 days grace period to do so. This will also entitled you to 'free credit report' without having to pay for it, of course the law has changed now that you are entitle to one or two in a year for free.
(B) IMPORTANT TO KNOW:Whenever you request for your free credit report, they will need your Social Security number, your DOB or some type of identification number to make sure you are the right person. If you don't give them this information they will denied you a free credit report.
(C) Before you mail it Back after corrections:More things to look for in your Credit Report: You want to pay attention to inquiries that companies made on your behalf to solicit for marketing purposes or job hunting. Sometimes these inquiries can go against you. They are things you can do to stop this kind of inquiries.
You can write to three Credit agencies not to allow inquiries that you did not authorized to go on your report. If everything goes well with your corrections, wait for about 6 months before you try again to apply for a new credit card with the major companies. However, I will encourage you to try to apply with some small companies that are willing to give you a small loan of about $500.00 for a try out since you have Bad Credit. Once you find one of those companies, you can start to make your payments back on schedule, this will help you to start rebuilding your credit even before all the corrections ever take place, you will be back in business. This new payment will start getting reported on your credit report and some companies will begin to trust you.
(D) THE RIGHT TO KNOW:You need to correct all three credit reports because every company use different credit agency to make their decision, therefore, is very important that you request corrections from all three major credit report companies.
As a consumer you have the right to know what has been reported on your Credit Report. This is enforced by the ''The Fair Credit Reporting Act'' The Credit Reporting Agency is allowed to report any positive/negative credit and also any public record you may have on your credit report, such as divorce, Law suits etc. This will stay on your record for 7 years from the date it happens or 10 years, if you file for bankruptcy chapter, 7, 11, 12, or 13. When you apply for your credit you will be told what you need to do to remove them from your records by your lawyer or credit counseling.
(E) WHO HAS RECEIVED YOUR CREDIT REPORT?Credit Agency will list all your creditors on your credit report when you receive them. If you did not give them permission, this illegal for that company to do you can take legal action against that company if you choose to do so.
(F) REVIEWING YOUR CREDIT REPORT:As a consumer you have the right to know what is in your credit report. However, you must request for it within 60 days or being denied credit. This report will be sent to you free of charge.
(G) DISPUTING INCORRECT INFORMATION ON YOUR REPORT: Credit Agency will correct any Information that you disagreed with after their investigation. You will get an official letter in the of their findings. They will also update your record for you right away. This will really improve your credit scores.
(H) MAILING PREFERENCES: Sometimes credit companies or marketing companies will give your name to some companies who soliciting for marketing their product to consumer. As I said before you can stop them from doing so by following my recommendation above.
(I) CREDIT 'REPAIR COMPANIES: 'The Consumer Credit Counseling Services 'CCCS' this is a non-profit organization that offers free or low cost financial counseling to help people with bad credit to clean their credit report, but if you just follow our advice in this booklet you do not need to pay anyone. Sometimes they will do a good job, but there are some of them that will not do a good job but just take you for a ride. Some States have regulations some don't, therefore, you have no recourse against them.
